Star’s Rat Rescue has started a Rat Train…please see below and please feel free to cross post..

Star’s Rat Rescue is in need of the following:

Adopters
Transportation
Overnight Stays

If you can do all three that’s wonderful, but if you can only do 1 that’s wonderful too. Please help a rat find his/her forever home.

Please let us know if you can adopt rats, if you can please list how many and the sex.

Please let us know if you can provide transportation, please list what cities/states you are willing to travel to, how many rats you can carry in your vehicle and when you are available for transport.

Please let us know if you can keep some rats for a short period of time, until the next transport is available and how many you can accommodate.

Please send the information to the above email, as we have someone co-ordinating the rat train for us and they will contact you shortly. Once we have all the information and if we have enough people to help, we will then work with the adopters so they can choose the rat they want. Adopters, we will have pictures for you at that time.

RatChatter Forums Are Two Today

The RatChatter web site and the RatChatter forums are two years old today.

It was Aug 1, 2007 that we officially opened the RatChatter forums to the general public, although from the beginning of July 2007 we had sent out a few private invitations to the forums that were also accepted.

Our membership has grown over the last two years; and, Mrs.R and I are very happy for the interest and community that is building. We have a fantastic group of “Chatters” that we greatly appreciate and look forward to being involved with every day.

Our forum moderators, the “ladies” as we often refer to them, are the best in our minds. Each one of them bringing a rat-friendly but different view which I believe allows us to keep the RatChatter forums a family-friendly, helpful community filled with care and information to share and grow with.

We have been working behind the scenes to make changes to the RatChatter web site with the intent to change the “portal” front page. The new “front page” is still being designed and there are a few more details to sort out with the change but we hope to finish in the near future.

We look forward to many more years of activity and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members, and staff, for their time; their efforts; and, especially for caring for each other and their families over the last two years.

May we be able to continue, and to thank everyone again, for many more years to come.

Cleaning Day – Part II

Another cleaning day but not like other cleaning days. Yesterday we moved the new boys in with some of our resident rats and we thought all would be well. Sure there were a few squabbles and a bunch of screeching and some serious boxing matches throughout the night (yes, all night long) but it was nothing we were not expecting or prepared for.

Today, on the other hand, after a relatively peaceful breakfast together, the mix of new and old boys started to go awry. I was in the middle of my usual Sunday activities which includes cleaning the girls homes when a terrible racket started coming out of the boys room. Dropping everything I go dashing into the boys room only to find Mrs.R already holding little Starsky. Then I noticed the blood.

No blood, no foul. That is the rat introduction rule of thumb. Let them squawk, let them box, let them run up and down the ramps and chase each other about just as long as no one gets seriously hurt. A few bumps and bruises are fine, but bleeding is a show stopper. Starsky was bleeding from his back leg at his ankle.

We rushed him into the bathroom for a washing off under running water to get a look at the cut. It looks deep but stopped bleeding almost immediately. We put some styptic powder on it just to help staunch the flow and moved Starsky, Hutch, and Snuggie-Bear back to their “Welcome” home. Starsky also was given a very tiny drop of a vet recommended anti-inflammatory due to his ankle appearing to be slightly swollen.

The new boys’ temporary home was due to be cleaned and put back in storage after I was finished with the girls, but I guess that will have to wait until next weekend when we try again, provided Starsky is back to 100%.

Spaghetti Dinner

Here is the update to the new living arrangements: besides a very sad WiiOne (who was moved back to his old home at the end) everything seems to be going well.

Mrs.R and I had spaghetti for dinner tonight and as our usual we shared with all the rats. It is one of their favorite treats. We made sure the new boys got a bowl just for them while Bruiser made sure they knew what to do with these long wiggly strings of goodness.

The Christmas boys have not had spaghetti before and apparently they enjoy it as much as the other boys do.

Now, as I look around the room at the boys homes, I see a bunch of pasta induced sleepy rats; and, a small rat pile in the back made up of the newest boys and Mr. Bruiser.

All is good in the Rattitude rat homes.

Happy New Year

2008 was the year of the Rat, 2009 is not. This is not to say 2009 will be any less interesting or less important it will simply not be a rat year.

Will I be making any new year’s resolutions? No, I have not made one in quite some time. I do not see January 1st as an auspicious date to make life decisions with. A great many people make these decisions still under the influence of the festivities of the night before.

What I will do is extend to everyone that reads this and those that do not, too: Hopes and wishes of a healthy, happy, and prosperous new year and future where you not only get what you want but also what you deserve.

Written on my iPod Touch with the help of the Christmas boys: Snuggie-bear, Starsky and Hutch (our most recent pet rats).

Pet Rat Barred

I believe every rat deserves a proper education. There is no reason they should be segregated or forced to be home-schooled. I claim racial injustice on behalf of rats everywhere.

Just kidding … well, not really … the point is well said with this quote from the article:

I don’t understand why he is not being allowed to take his pet in school, his friend has taken in a hamster in before now.

I may have a biased opinion, but rats are much more social and tolerate handling by strangers a lot better than a hamster would. A true hands-on experience for the show-and-tell study with a pet rat would have much more of an impact than just being near forced to only watch a hamster in a cage.

This is not the first time I have made light of this school decision, and I will likely write on similar cases as I come across them.

Educate our rats … and our teachers, too!

Flaming Pet Rat Starts Fire, Damages Titusville Home – News Of The Strange Story – WFTV Orlando

This is NOT the fault of the pet rat!!! Please read the whole story to see the real person responsible for this. Sensationalistic journalism is such a poor excuse for finger-pointing reporting.

Maybe the strange sells newspapers, or gains advertising revenues, but this is simply a case of very poor inebriated judgement. The real culprit of this story is the supposed pet rat keeper, and as far as I am concerned that situation should be very closely reviewed by the local SPCA.
